Sensory Silicone Chew Beads - Chewelry Beads - Did You Know Section

Teething is the process by which an infant's first teeth (the deciduous teeth, often called "baby teeth" or "milk teeth") appear by emerging through the gums, typically arriving in pairs. The mandibular central incisors are the first primary teeth to erupt, usually between 6 and 10 months of age and usually causes discomfort and pain to the infant. It can take several years for all 20 teeth to complete the tooth eruption. Though the process of teething is sometimes referred to as "cutting teeth", when teeth emerge through the gums they do not cut through the flesh. Instead, hormones are released within the body that cause some cells in the gums to die and separate, allowing the teeth to come through.

Teething may cause a slightly elevated temperature, but not rising into the fever range of greater than 38.0 °C (100 °F). Higher temperatures during teething are due to some form of infection widespread among children of teething age.

Did you know that the infant teeth tend to emerge in pairs ?– first one lower incisor emerges, then the other lower incisor, after which the next set begin to emerge. The general pattern of emergence is:

  •     Lower central incisors at approximately 6 months
  •     Upper central incisors at approximately 8 months
  •     Upper lateral incisors at approximately 10 months
  •     Lower lateral incisors at approximately 10 months
  •     First molars at approximately 14 months
  •     Canines at approximately 18 months
  •     Second molars at approximately 2–3 years

Milk teeth tend to emerge sooner in females than in males. The exact pattern and initial starting times of teething appear to be hereditary. When and how teeth appear in an infant has no bearing on the health of the child.

Pulling on the ears is another sign of pain: the pain in the mouth throbs throughout the baby's head, so they pull their ears believing that it will provide relief. Mild rash can develop around the mouth due to the skin irritation caused by excessive drooling or dribbling

A lot of moms provide teething toys and nursing necklaces to their babies to sooth teething pains.

Silicone Sensory Chew Beads Benefits

Engaging in sensory activities is beneficial in several ways, as it can help with:

  • Stimulating the brain, creating neutral pathways and improving sensory processing systems
  • Improving social skills as communication and co-operation
  • Improving co-ordination, as well as fine/gross motor skills
  • Calming children down when they are agitated

Try a range of activities to stimulate all of the five senses – touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Try small activities and evaluate what works well, and what should be avoided based on the individual child. For touch, signt and hearing you can use silicone beads  - they have a particular touch appeal , as they are soft and comfortable to the touch. Remember, sensory activities will be beneficial for all of the children in your care. Children will often seek out sensory activities if none are provided and you may find them in the sink/toilet playing with the water, squeezing and smearing paint, banging toys, shredding paper, card etc. Pulling down displays searching for Blu-tac is also a sensory seeking behaviour you may see.

Having accessible activities fulfill these sensory needs will hopefully reduce the inappropriate activities.

Examples of appropriate and directed sensory activities should be incorporated into their daily learning:

  • Gloopy play for smearing
  • Water play
  • Sensory Silicione beads play
  • Playdough
  • Wet and dry sand
  • Tough spot with paper to shred
  • Leaves, pasta or similar for children to pick up and drop (visual stimulation)
  • Mixing paint and mark making
  • Safe space (tented area with cushions) to include sound and light cause and effect toys and books
